The Stepmom’s Guide To A Happy Mother's Day

In the beginning, days like Mother’s Day were awkward for me and a little bit painful. Here are two kids calling me mom, saying how much they loved me, but when it came to Mother’s day, they shared the day with someone else. As upsetting as it may have been, My amazing husband would go out of his way to make me feel special even if we had to celebrate special occasions on a different day.

I can imagine it was awkward for the kids too. After all, they did not ask to have to celebrate two moms. In elementary school, they were given the task of doing a particular art project for their mom, but who do they give it too? Their biological mom, of course! I know they love me,

but I'm mom number two and always will be. I discovered emotions that I did not plan on feeling or even know existed. Somedays, I felt like an emotional hurdle jumper in a track and field race.

After many tears and years later, with the help of my husband and God, I started embracing my position as The Stepmom. The role you play in your family is vital, and finding opportunities to celebrate God is staining.

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come

Proverbs 31:25

Here is what I have learned to do over the years when celebrating special days like Mother’s Day.

  1. Don’t set too high of expectations; no one planned life to be this way. It just happened.

  2. Learn to be ok with Mother’s day being on a different day; You are still loved.

  3. Don’t expect the children to put you before their biological mom

  4. Let your husband plan the day

I want to leave you with this verse, post it up as a daily reminder that God sees you and is waiting to hear from you.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7
