There is a fantastic love story in the bible, The Song of Solomon. It is a hot and steamy story about a soon to be bride and her true love. You will find many theories out there about who the woman's true love is, but what I want to focus on is their love for one another.
The book covers the courtship, the wedding, and the marriage.
The soon to be bride is an insecure, poor woman working in the vineyard. She is insecure because her skin has darkened by the sun from hard labor. Her brothers were angry with her and put her to work in the vineyard.
But her soon to be husband, doesn't seem to mind because he only sees her beauty and longs for the day they can be married.
Behold, you are beautiful, my love; behold,
you are beautiful; your eyes are doves.
The Song OF Solomon 1:15
Think back to when you first met your spouse, how did you feel? For most of us, it starts awkwardly; you feel giddy, your stomach is filled with butterflies, and the thought of being apart is agony and drives you crazy. That is what is happening in this love story. The woman and her soon to be husband are so madly in love that they do not want to be apart.
You have captured my heart, my treasure, my bride.
You hold it hostage with one glance of your eyes,
with a single jewel of your necklace.
Song Of Solomon 4:9
The purpose of, The Song of Solomon is a lyric poem written to praise the virtues of love between a husband and his wife. The book presents marriage as God's design. This book shows passion, respect, and intimacy that should be shared in marriage.
"Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave.
Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised."
Song Of Solomon 8:6-7
Ask yourself these questions:
1. What do you want to happen in your marriage?
2. What is your favorite thing about being married?
3. What does intimacy look like to you?
4. What do you need from your spouse?
5. What is something you can do for your spouse?
I challenge you to read the Song of Solomon and then ask God to show you areas that you may need to change within your heart to better your marriage.
