When the foundation of a house begins to crack, it starts to fall apart, and the structure of a home cannot withstand a poorly built foundation. If the damage is left unrepaired or ignored, it will crumble, just like a marriage needs a sturdy foundation and maintenance checks. If the marital union is left unattended, it can drive them to divorce, tearing the family apart.
The purpose of a strong foundation
1. Support the load of the entire building
2. Be able to withstand the forces of nature
3. Built to keep moisture from seeping in and weakening the structure
he is like a man building a house, who dug deep
and laid the foundation on the rock.
And when a flood arose, the stream broke
Against that house and could not shake it,
because it had been well built.
Luke 6:48
The purpose of a strong foundation of a marriage
1. Be able to withstand the storms of life.
2. Be able to recognize the attack of the enemy
3. Becoming one with your spouse
The Cornerstone
The cornerstone is the single most crucial piece of the foundation. It is the first stone set in the construction, and the other stones will be placed according to the cornerstone.
Jesus is the cornerstone! He is the single most crucial piece in building a foundation for our lives. God sent Jesus, set him in place so we can forever be with him.
therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold,
I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion,
a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone,
of a sure foundation: 'Whoever believes will not be in haste.'
Isaiah 28:16
Unfortunately, many have rejected to build upon the cornerstone like God's chosen people, the Israelites.
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures:
'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?
Matthew 21:42
My husband and I are currently in counseling. It is helping us to identify our communication style and guiding us to a healthier way of conflict resolution. We both came into the marriage as Christians but are still learning to build our house on the true cornerstone.
As individuals, Jesus should be our cornerstone, but we still need to make him our cornerstone in marriage. Ephesians 2: 20-22 says, "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit."
Conclusion
God placed his son, Jesus, here on earth as the cornerstone, the foundation for us to build not only our lives upon but to solidify our eternity. He should be that piece in our individual lives as well as our marriage.
Will you make Jesus the cornerstone of your marriage today?
